At Denis Rawlins Ltd, we believe that providing industry-leading equipment, products and solutions should never come at the expense of the planet.
As a UK business, we recognise our responsibility to reduce the environmental impact of our operations and supply chain. That is why we are committed to supporting the transition towards a low-carbon economy and working towards Net Zero emissions.
For us, sustainability isn't simply about making small changes around the edges of the business. When we reviewed where our environmental impact comes from, we recognised that we needed to think differently about how we operate.
As a distributor, a significant proportion of our environmental footprint comes from Scope 3 emissions – particularly those associated with the manufacture, transportation and delivery of the products we supply.
We therefore took a step back and looked at our entire operating model.
The result is a series of significant changes designed to reduce our direct environmental impact while helping us tackle the wider emissions associated with our supply chain.
Reducing Our Carbon Footprint Today
We have already implemented three major changes to the way we operate.
🌱 A 100% Remote Workforce
We have eliminated the need for a central corporate office for our administrative and office-based teams.
Our fully remote working model removes the need for employees to commute to a central workplace every day, while also eliminating the energy consumption associated with operating a traditional commercial office – including heating, lighting and other building-related energy use.
Remote working also allows us to operate more efficiently while reducing the physical infrastructure required to run our business.
⚡ A 100% Electric Vehicle Fleet
For members of our team whose roles require regular travel – including field sales, site assessments and customer visits – we have transitioned our company vehicle fleet to 100% electric vehicles.
This represents a significant investment in reducing the environmental impact of our business travel.
By moving away from conventional combustion-engine vehicles, we have eliminated tailpipe emissions from our direct company vehicle travel.
It is an important step towards reducing our Scope 1 emissions and ensuring that the way our teams travel reflects our wider commitment to sustainability.
📦 Smarter, More Efficient Logistics
Our approach to sustainability doesn't stop with our own offices and vehicles.
We have strategically outsourced warehousing and distribution to a Third-Party Logistics (3PL) partner.
Rather than operating a standalone warehouse, this approach allows us to benefit from shared facilities, infrastructure and energy use, alongside established and consolidated delivery networks.
We also look for opportunities to reduce unnecessary transportation. Where commercially viable, we prioritise suppliers and distribution hubs located closer to the end customer and use direct-to-customer delivery from manufacturers where this can remove unnecessary stages in the supply chain.
The aim is simple: move products as efficiently as possible, while reducing unnecessary transport and energy consumption.

Tackling the Bigger Challenge: Scope 3 Emissions
Reducing our direct operational footprint is only part of the challenge.
For a distribution business like ours, many of the emissions associated with what we do sit outside our immediate operations. These are known as Scope 3 emissions and can include emissions generated during manufacturing, transportation, packaging and the wider product lifecycle.
This is where we believe meaningful progress requires collaboration.
We are actively working with our manufacturers, suppliers and logistics partners to identify opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of the products we supply.
Our procurement approach increasingly considers environmental performance alongside the traditional factors of quality, suitability and value.
Where possible, we prioritise suppliers that:
- Have published environmental policies or emissions targets
- Are taking steps towards renewable energy
- Manufacture durable products designed for a longer working life
- Offer repairable or recyclable products
- Use recycled or recyclable packaging
- Work to minimise unnecessary packaging and transportation
By considering the entire lifecycle of a product, rather than simply what happens once it arrives with us, we can make better-informed purchasing decisions and encourage positive change throughout our supply chain.
Reducing Waste Before It Happens
Sustainability is also about avoiding unnecessary activity in the first place.
One area we are focusing on is reducing unnecessary returns and repeat deliveries.
Our websites are being developed with increasingly detailed product information, including accurate dimensions, technical specifications, applications and guidance on selecting the right product.
The better information we can provide before an order is placed, the more confident customers can be in their purchasing decision.
That can mean fewer unsuitable products being ordered, fewer returns and less unnecessary transportation.
It is a relatively simple principle: getting the right product to the right customer the first time is better for both our customers and the environment.
Our Journey Towards Net Zero
We are proud of the progress we have already made, but we are not claiming that the journey is finished.
Achieving Net Zero requires ongoing measurement, improvement and transparency.
Our Carbon Reduction Policy sets out our commitment to:
- Establishing an accurate and updated carbon baseline
- Monitoring the environmental performance of our operations and logistics partners
- Setting measurable annual reduction targets
- Increasing engagement with suppliers around emissions and sustainability
- Continuing to assess product lifecycle and packaging
- Reviewing our carbon reduction policy and progress annually
As our understanding of our emissions improves, so will our ability to identify where further reductions can be made.
Sustainability Is a Journey, Not a One-Off Project
We know that there is no single change that will solve the environmental challenges facing businesses today.
Instead, meaningful progress comes from looking at the way a business operates as a whole – from how employees work and travel, to how products are manufactured, packaged, stored and delivered.
Moving to a fully remote workforce, transitioning our company fleet to electric vehicles and adopting a more efficient 3PL logistics model represent major changes to the way Denis Rawlins Ltd operates.
At the same time, we are continuing to work further upstream with our suppliers and manufacturing partners to address the emissions that sit within our wider supply chain.
We see sustainability as an ongoing commitment rather than a destination.

Transparency is an important part of that commitment.
We have documented our current approach, the operational changes we have implemented and our ongoing objectives in our Carbon Reduction Policy Statement.
The policy provides further detail on our approach to Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions, our supply chain priorities and the steps we are taking as we continue towards Net Zero.

Whether you are an existing customer, a new supplier, a business partner or a public sector organisation assessing our sustainability commitments as part of a tender process, we welcome you to read our policy and learn more about the steps we are taking.
Building a More Sustainable Future
We are proud of the progress we have already made, but we recognise that there is still more to do.
Our goal is to continue reducing the environmental impact of our business while providing the high-quality equipment and solutions our customers rely on.
By changing the way we work today and continuing to challenge how we source, transport and deliver products, we are taking practical steps towards a more sustainable future.
The journey towards Net Zero has already begun – and we are committed to continuing it.
